PSG kept waiting for title after Berbatov inspires Monaco

Paris St Germain were kept waiting for their second successive Ligue 1 title after a double from Dimitar Berbatov helped second-placed Monaco crush bottom club Ajaccio 4-1 on Saturday.

Two second-half goals from Berbatov, an 88th-minute effort by Geoffrey Kondogbia and Lucas Ocampos's injury-time coup de grace led the visitors to victory while Junior Tallo replied for already-relegated Ajaccio.

Laurent Blanc's PSG can clinch the title with a win at third from bottom Sochaux on Sunday.

PSG, who won the French League Cup by beating Olympique Lyon 2-1 last Saturday, have 82 points with four games remaining. Monaco are seven points adrift with three matches to go.

Klitschko knocks out Leapai to retain WBO crown

World heavyweight champion Vladimir Klitschko easily retained his WBO crown when he knocked out Alex Leapai of Australia in the fifth round on Saturday.

The 38-year-old Klitschko, who holds the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO crowns, has now been unbeaten for 10 years with his most recent defeat back in April 2004 against Lamon Brewster.

Klitschko knocked down his opponent after a few seconds in the first round, a big left-right combination sending the 34-year-old Leapai sprawling.

The Ukrainian, whose record now stands at 62 wins with 52 knockouts and three defeats, then pummelled the hapless Australian in round five, knocking him down once again before a clean knockout with less than a minute left in the round.

The 34-year-old Leapai, who got a shot at the world title after his stunning win over Russian Denis Boytsov in November last year, never really offered any resistance to the 15-centimetre taller Klitschko, and bowed out quickly.

Napoli fail to take chances in draw with Inter

Napoli missed a chance to secure Champions League football next season when they shared a goalless draw with Inter Milan in an entertaining encounter on Saturday.

Rafael Benitez's third-placed Napoli have 69 points and extended their lead over Fiorentina, in fourth, to eight points with three games to play.

Benitez's men created plenty of chances but failed to capitalise on their superiority, particularly in the second half.

Jose Callejon was the worst culprit, volleying wide from Dries Mertens's pinpoint through ball in the 13th minute with the goal at his mercy, while Gokhan Inler struck the inside of the post with nine minutes left.

Vincenzo Montella's Fiorentina, who take on Napoli in next Saturday's Italian Cup final, crushed relegation-threatened Bologna 3-0 thanks to a double from Juan Cuadrado and a deflected strike from Josip Ilicic.

Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain may miss the final after leaving the field on a stretcher four minutes before the end following a thumping challenge from Marco Andreolli on the edge of the box just as the Argentine striker was set to shoot.

Inter, who created chances of their own in a frantic first half, are fifth on 57 points. They are four points behind Fiorentina and six ahead of AC Milan, who lost 2-0 at AS Roma on Friday, and Parma who travel to Cagliari on Sunday.

Roma vs. AC Milan 25/04/2014 Calcio

Roma will host AC Milan in Serie A on Friday, knowing that they must win to keep their hopes of being crowned champions alive.
Rudi Garcia's side are guaranteed to finish in the top two, but need to win their remaining four games and hope for a Juventus slump in order to overhaul the current league leaders.
The hosts, who have won their last eight matches, will be without in-form striker Mattia Destro again as he continues to serve his four-game suspension for punching Cagliari's Davide Astori earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Mehdi Benatia is also expected to miss out as he continues to recover from a muscle tear in his left leg.

The visitors will also have a number of injury concerns for their trip to Stadio Olimpico.
The Rossoneri, who have been in good form themselves recently, could still be without Keisuke Honda, who has missed their last two matches with an ankle injury, while Michael Essien is also a doubt and Nigel de Jong is suspended.
When the two sides met earlier in the season, the match finished in a 2-2 draw at the San Siro.

Real's pace too hot to handle, says Lahm

Bayern Munich could not contain Real Madrid's quicksilver counter-attacks, captain Philipp Lahm said after the European champions lost 1-0 in their Champions League semi-final, first leg on Wednesday.

Madrid were happy to cede possession to Bayern for large parts of the game at the Bernabeu, but were resilient in defence and struck the decisive blow when Karim Benzema rounded off a swift break with the only goal after 19 minutes.

"We could not stop all of Real's quick breaks," Lahm told German broadcaster ZDF.

"They are top team. It is impossible not to let them have at least one chance. We played to win we wanted a goal. Now we are trailing by one goal but it is not over yet.

"We wanted to do it better no question, but it is not that easy. We now play at home everything is possible at the Allianz Arena. We have shown we can turn games around and anything can happen."

Bayern looked short of ideas in attack as they sort to find a route through the ranks of Madrid defenders and now face a tricky task at home, where a solitary Real goal would leave them needing to score three.

Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer said Real's attacking players were always likely to pose a threat on the break and the German side would now have to figure out how to stop them putting in a repeat performance in Munich.

"We had problems today," he said. "We worked well but these are world-class players.

"When someone is as quick as (Gareth) Bale or (Cristiano)Ronaldo then you will always have problems with the counter- attacks. We can expect a similar game in Germany. We will try not to concede a goal in Munich. Everything can happen. We need to remain focused and not allow any quick breaks."

Bayern coach Pep Guardiola put the defeat down to poor finishing.

"I am proud of my team," he said. "They fought well against a tough opponent, one of the best in the world. We had a good game and I hope we will improve further next week.

"I did not want to have the typical German game of back and forth. I wanted a lot of possession and we managed that in part. But we did not finish our chances well."

Cavani double hands PSG French League Cup trophy

Paris St Germain collected their first trophy of the season when Edinson Cavani's double secured a 2-1 victory against Olympique Lyon in the French League Cup final on Saturday.

Uruguay striker Cavani netted twice in the first half, including a controversial penalty, to hand PSG their fourth League Cup title on a chilly night at the Stade de France.

Alexandre Lacazette reduced the arrears in the second half but Remi Garde's team could not find an equaliser.

Laurent Blanc's PSG team will now turn their attention towards claiming a second Ligue 1 title in succession as they hold a 10-point lead over AS Monaco with five games remaining.

Blanc claimed his side had put their Champions League quarter-final elimination by Chelsea behind them and the former France coach appeared to be right for a while.

Six days after losing 1-0 at Lyon in Ligue 1, PSG started the final by imposing their possession football on the game while their opponents sat back and waited to counter attack.

However, Lyon were forced to change their plans after four minutes when PSG scored their first goal in three games since striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was ruled out with a thigh injury.

Monaco put PSG title celebrations on hold

Monaco put Paris St Germain's Ligue 1 title celebrations on hold when they snatched a 1-0 win at Stade Rennes on Saturday.

Emmanuel Riviere's second-half strike put the principality side on 69 points from 33 games, 10 adrift of champions PSG, who travel to Olympique Lyon on Sunday.

A Monaco defeat would have given PSG the opportunity to clinch their second title in a row with five games to spare, but Claudio Ranieri's side, who are set to secure a direct Champions League qualifying spot, decided otherwise.

Visitors Monaco were the first in action with Joao Moutinho's early drive going just over the bar and Riviere's low shot being blocked by Benoit Costil.

Layvin Kurzawa also came close from close range midway through the first half but Costil made another good save.

Kurzawa left the pitch with a thigh injury shortly before the break and was substituted by Andrea Raggi.

Monaco went ahead 10 minutes into the second half when Riviere beat Costil from close range after being set up by Jeremy Toulalan.

Rennes pushed hard to equalise but the Monaco defence, perfectly marshalled by Ricardo Carvalho, held on.

Monaco, however, were without French international defender Eric Abidal, whose chances of making it into France's World Cup squad look extremely slim as he was not included in the squad.

Mkhitaryan back on form as Dortmund crush Bayern

Borussia Dortmund bounced back from their Champions League exit against Real Madrid in midweek to crush Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich 3-0 in spectacular fashion on Saturday.

For the Bavarians, already crowned German champions, the defeat was their second in a row in the league after a record 53-game unbeaten run.

They also had Brazilian Rafinha sent off for slapping Henrikh Mkhitaryan in stoppage time.

The visitors took a 21st minute lead when Mkhitaryan slotted home after some good play, the Armenian making up for a string of missed chances in the 3-2 aggregate defeat against Real on Tuesday.

The midfielder, who apologised to his team mates and fans for his midweek lapses, kept his cool after Marco Reus sent him through with a fine pass.

Bayern, who face Real in the Champions League last four, were further hampered when goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was taken off at halftime with a calf muscle injury, making way for third-choice Lukas Raeder.

The 20-year-old's league debut got off to a nightmare start after 49 minutes when Mkhitaryan launched a quick break and Reus tapped in with the keeper out of position.

Raeder could do nothing, however, when Jonas Hofmann broke free to rifle in Dortmund's third in the 56th minute as the 71,000-crowd in the Allianz Arena fell silent.

Bayern tried desperately to hit back but they rarely got past a solid Dortmund defence and were reduced to long-range efforts which sailed wide.

With the title sewn up and in the Champions League last four, Bayern face second division Kaiserslautern in the semi-finals of the German Cup next week and are still on track to repeat their unprecedented trophy treble of last season.

Stuttgart let in late goal at Gladbach to stay in danger zone

Former Bundesliga champions VfB Stuttgart conceded an 89th minute equaliser to draw 1-1 at Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday and remain deep in the relegation battle.

Midfielder Daniel Didavi, who was only picked to play at the last minute, slotted in from close range after 12 minutes for the lead.

The visitors were far more aggressive and hungrier than Gladbach and hit the post with Ibrahima Traore in the 87th with a fierce free kick.

But they let their guard down the following minute allowing Juan Arango to head in the equaliser a minute from time.

The 2007 Bundesliga champions are on 28 points, one above Hamburg SV who lost 2-1 at Hanover 96 courtesy of a late winner from Didier Ya Konan to remain in the relegation playoff spot.

Gladbach dropped to fifth with VfL Wolfsburg making the most of their draw to crush Nuremberg 4-1 and leapfrog into fourth place a point above, and in contention for a spot in the Champions League competition next season.

Goals from Croats Ivan Perisic and Ivica Olic cancelled out Nuremberg's early lead. Junior Malanda and Perisic added two more late in the game.

Champions Bayern Munich take on second-placed Borussia Dortmund in the league's big game later on Saturday.

Schalke 04 are level with Dortmund on 58 points after beating Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 on Friday.

Schalke stay in hunt for second spot

Schalke 04 kept up their chase for the Bundesliga runners-up spot with a dominant 2-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday to move level on points with second-placed Borussia Dortmund.

Max Meyer put the hosts ahead in the 59th minute after Sead Kolasinac's long-range effort hit the woodwork and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, back in the side after injury, had his rebound saved by Kevin Trapp.

Trapp denied the Dutch striker again seven minutes later by saving his penalty but the hosts kept pouring forward in a one-sided affair with Brazil coach Felipe Scolari in the stands of the Auf Schalke arena.

Schalke hit the bar again through Leon Goretzka in the 81st but winger Jefferson Farfan, also returning from injury after a six-week absence, curled a superb free kick into the top corner to seal the win in stoppage time.

"I was not satisfied at all in the first half because we did a lot of things wrong," said Schalke coach Jens Keller, whose future at the club has been the subject of specualtion during a rollercoaster season which has produced a strong finish.

Schalke are unbeaten in seven league games and have won all four of their last home matches.

"I told my players exactly that at half time but after that we improved greatly. A lot of respect for that," Keller told reporters.

As for Huntelaar's fourth spot-kick miss out of his last six, Keller said: "The chances of him taking another penalty are diminishing."

Schalke have 58 points with four games left, trailing only on goal difference behind Dortmund who travel to champions and bitter rivals Bayern Munich on Saturday.

Bayern Munich to face Real Madrid, Atletico to meet Chelsea

Two European football heavyweights will collide in the UEFA Champions League semifinals after Bayern Munich and Real Madrid were drawn together in Switzerland on Friday.
Bayern, winners of the competition last season, and nine-time champions Real will both be looking to book a place in the final, which will take place in Lisbon on May 24.
The other semifinal paired Real's city rivals Atletico Madrid with Chelsea, who lifted the trophy for the first time in their history in 2012.
The semifinal first leg matches will take place on April 22-23, with the ties concluding with the second legs on April 28-29.

German champions Bayern are looking to become the first team to defend the European Cup in the post-1992 Champions League era.
Led by former Barcelona coach Josep Guardiola, Bayern fought from behind to defeat Manchester United on Tuesday.
Real will appear in the semifinals of Europe's premier club competition for the 25th time in their illustrious history, with Cristiano Ronaldo and co. out to secure Los Blancos a record 10th triumph.
Carlo Ancelotti's team survived a spirited comeback from Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday to reach the last four with a 3-2 aggregate win.
The two teams met at the same stage of the competition in 2012, with Bayern prevailing after a nerve-shredding penalty shootout.
Bayern went on to lose to Chelsea in the final two years ago. The London club's manager Jose Mourinho is bidding to win the tournament with a third different club after previous successes with Porto in 2004 and Inter Milan in 2010.
Chelsea needed a late goal from striker Demba Ba to register an away-goals win over Paris Saint-Germain in the last eight.
Atletico Madrid could be without the services of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who is on-loan at the Vicente Calderon stadium from Chelsea.
Rumors surfaced on Thursday that an agreement between the two teams meant Courtois would only be able to play in both matches against his parent club if Atletico pay Chelsea €6 million ($8.3 million.)
European football's governing body UEFA announced Friday that any such agreement would be "null, void and unenforceable."
"Furthermore, any attempt to enforce such a provision would be a clear violation of both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations and would therefore be sanctioned accordingly," read a statement from the organization.
While Chelsea are appearing in the semifinals for the seventh time in the last 11 seasons, Atletico haven't reached this stage since 1974.
Atletico's coach Diego Simeone has led something of a renaissance at the club, leading them to the top of the Spanish league table with just six games left of the campaign.
A goal from talented playmaker Koke was enough to see off four-time European champions Barcelona in Tuesday's quarterfinal second leg.

Valencia complete stunning comeback to beat Basle

Valencia completed an astonishing comeback against Basle to reach the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday by overhauling a three-goal deficit helped by a hat-trick from Paco Alcacer to win 5-3 on aggregate after extra time.

It completed a good night for Spain as 10-man Sevilla tormented a fragile Porto side to secure a 4-2 aggregate victory as Juventus and Benfica joined them in the last four after safely negotiating their quarter-final second legs.

Basle were 3-0 up heading into the second leg at a highly-charged Mestalla stadium, but came up against a Valencia side with the bit between their teeth.

An Alcacer double and one from Eduardo Vargas levelled the tie at 3-3 to force extra time in which the Swiss had Marcelo Diaz and Gaston Sauro sent off before Alcacer got his treble and Juan Bernat added a fifth to end an extraordinary clash.

Sevilla overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit to rout the Portuguese 4-1 on the night with an Ivan Rakitic penalty and further goals from Vitolo, Carlos Bacca and Kevin Gameiro before Porto's Ricardo Quaresma scored a spectacular late consolation.

The draw for the semi-finals is on Friday
